Marie Kondo's new Netflix show about 'Tidying Up' is on everyone's radar with the whole "new year new you" theme.

I decided to give it a shot and watch an episode or two. I was shocked at how inspiring it was. Mostly because I looked around me as I was watching it and realized just how NOT TIDY I am.

Imagine: Clothes falling out of drawers, drawers unable to shut properly, clothes piled in my closet floor, constantly running out of hangers in my closet, clothes I haven't worn in years but have held on to for some reason, you get the picture...

My main task was MY CLOTHES.

Marie Kondo walks the people on the show through cleaning out their clothes and really reducing the number of clothes they have. Here are the top 3 tips for cleaning out your closet.

#1 Take out ALL of your clothes, and put them ALL on your bed.

The first step to cleaning out your closet and drawers and reducing the number of clothes you have is to gather everything you have all together.

When you take out every. single. item. from your closet and dresser drawers and lie them all on your bed, you can see just how much you actually have. This will help you realize the extent of your problem (mine was a big problem - my clothes completely covered up and were piled HIGH on my king size bed). Take it all in.

#2 Pick up each item and hold on to it to see if it sparks JOY

Generally, when we are cleaning out our clothes we decide if we want to keep something by simply looking at it. Believe it or not, it makes a big difference if you actually pick up the item, hold on to it, and see if it sparks joy. Many times we justify keeping an item {that we won't ever wear} for some other reason: i.e we've never worn it, we have good memories in that item of clothing, it's still stylish, etc. BUT, if it doesn't spark joy, why hold on to it?

#3 Say T H A N K Y O U and let it go

This is the key to getting rid of stuff! When you say thank you, think of the good times, and let it go with gratitude, it makes it so much easier. This is the best way to clean out old things because you're not regretfully cleaning out your closet. You're doing it with gratitude and that makes all the difference in the world. Another key is to gently place the items into a basket or bag ready to go on to their new home. Don't toss it! Show it love and gratefulness. Bless and release, sister!
